This website, Is Sugar?, is brought to you by CANEGROWERS and the Australian Sugar Milling Council (ASMC).

We are the industry associations that separately represent around 75% of Australia’s 4,000 sugarcane growers and the five sugar milling companies that make 90% of Australia’s raw sugar.

As sugarcane growers and sugar manufacturers we are often asked about sugar and its role in a healthy lifestyle.

The public’s perceptions of sugar have changed dramatically in recent years. From being a staple in every pantry, sugar is now being labelled by some as harmful, even toxic.  Others go so far as to call for sugar to be taxed like no other food ingredient.

Our aim with this website is to provide you with clear, accurate and straight forward answers to your questions about the sugar we produce. There’s also links to information from technical experts and government so you can find out more. 

As an industry, we want to be actively involved in discussions about sugar, obesity and health to ensure balanced and accurate information is available to everyone.
